FIELD: hydraulic engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to ice breaking devices installed on piers of river bridges and it is designed to prevent formation of ice jams before bridges at ice coverage and ice drift periods. Proposed device is ice breaking structure installed on bridge pair upstream and made in form of horizontal cantilever beams on ends f which ice breaking device is secured. Said device is made in form of screw freely rotating at interaction with moving-on ice field owing to river current and creating downward vertical load breaking the ice. To create torque on screw even at symmetrical load from moving-on ice relative to axis of rotation, asymmetrical recesses are made on edges of screw similar in form of teeth of wood-working saws, i.e. in form of cutter with shape of teeth providing rotation of screw at contact with ice in direction making for predrowning of edges of ice cover. Diameter of screws should be not less than cross size of bridge piers to provide unobstructed passing of ice fields between bridge piers.
EFFECT: improved efficiency of ice breaking.
