FIELD: mechanical engineering.
SUBSTANCE: connecting rod of variable length comprises guiding housing, screw cylindrical compression spring of variable pitch, stepped rod, and pin locking member. The load on the spring due to preliminary compression provided in the rod design should be no more than that caused by the pressure on the piston required for igniting the mixture in the cylinder, but less than that caused by the front of the pressure pulse during ignition. When the length of the connecting rode changes during engine operation, the spring, being deformed along its axis or the axis of the connecting rod, accumulates mechanical energy and does not operate in the limit regime of compression, thus damping the front of the pressure pulse in ignition and releasing accumulated compression energy to set the crankshaft into rotation and decompressing to the initial condition according to approximately cosine law.
EFFECT: enhanced efficiency of internal combustion engine.
