FIELD: investigating or analyzing materials.

SUBSTANCE: method comprises generating and receiving pulses of transverse and/or longitudinal acoustical waves by means of electromagnetic acoustical converters polarized along and across the direction of rolling, measuring time of coming bottom pulses reflected from the opposite wall of the article, and calculating at least one value of the informative ratios for each article. Information on the homogeneity of mechanical properties of the article is gathered simultaneously with ultrasonic testing to detect cavities with the use the same electromagnetic acoustical converters. The zones where cavities are detected are not tested to detect irregularity of the mechanical properties. To perform a comprehensive testing, including searching cavities and deviations of mechanical properties, a set of two or more electromagnetic acoustical converters is used. Each set comprises at least two active members which are optimal for generating and receiving flexible waves of specified type and polarization. The information collected is used for making a decision if the article is suitable.
