FIELD: inorganic chemistry, chemical technology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to manufacturing elemental sulfur from sulfur oxide gas, for example, from nonferrous metallurgy gases comprising sulfur dioxide. Method involves reduction of sulfur oxide gas comprising sulfur dioxide with hydrocarbons at increased temperature and the following processing in the presence of a catalyst to form elemental sulfur by Claus method. Before the first catalytical step in Claus-processing method reduced sulfur oxide gas is passed through additional step at temperature 350-600°C followed by its cooling to temperature 230-250°C and then subjected for catalytic Claus-processing procedure. Method allows decreasing the specific consumption of reducing agent, for example, natural gas (methane) and to enhance the yield of the end product. Invention can be used in plants of chemical, petroleum chemical, gas-processing and metallurgy industries.
