FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy; electrolytic production of aluminum and construction of electrolyzer.
SUBSTANCE: proposed electrolyzer excludes arising of horizontal currents in cathode, seepage through hearth and over rod-lining boundary, penetration of alkaline metals into hearth. Cathode rods made from aluminum vertically pass through hearth lining in liquid state in upper part and are brought in contact with cathode aluminum melt; they are solid in lower part; they are made in form of inverted truncated cone at ratio of lower base section to area of upper base section equal to 1:2. Cathode unit hearth is made from refractory material which is not interacting with molten aluminum.
EFFECT: low cost of electrolyzer; reduced expenses for major repair of electrolyzer.
