FIELD: engineering of devices for generation and acceleration of plasma, in particular, for engines of spacecrafts.
SUBSTANCE: suggested accelerator contains ionizing chamber, magnetic system, electrode system and devices for injecting neutral working gas into chamber. Electrode system creates a mainly longitudinally oriented electrostatic accelerating field in the chamber for positively charged ions. Magnetic system creates a magnetic field in the chamber, the field having a so-called cusped structure. The structure is characterized by the fact, that at least one section of the first sort is available in longitudinal direction, with magnetic field, oriented primarily perpendicularly to that longitudinal direction. On both sides of aforementioned first sort section one section of second sort is present with magnetic field, oriented primarily in parallel to aforementioned longitudinal direction. Chamber has outlet aperture for ions in longitudinal direction and input limited by enveloping wall on the sides. Transverse section of the chamber, perpendicular to aforementioned longitudinal direction, is simply connected and in first direction (y) is at least twice larger than in second (z) perpendicular to the first one.
EFFECT: creation of ion accelerator using more flexible design principles.
