FIELD: organic chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to method for production of alkylhydroxyalkyl cellulose by interaction of cellulose with alkylation agent and hydroxyalkylation agent in presence of alkali, namely: a) cellulose is alkalified with 0.9-2.9 eq of alkali metal hydroxide/AGU introducing in form of aqueous alkali in presence of suspending agent containing haloalkyl wherein amount of haloalkyl is calculated according to the next formula: from [alkali metal hydroxide total per AGU] to [alkali metal hydroxide total per AGU plus 4.5]; b) alkali cellulose is react with alkylation agent and hydroxyalkylation agent such as one or more alkylene oxide at temperature of 65°C or more; c) alkali metal hydroxide is repeatedly added in form of aqueous alkali; and d) alkylhydroxyalkyl cellulose contained in reaction mixture is isolated and optionally purified.
