FIELD: paper-and-pulp industry.

SUBSTANCE: cellulose ethers showing gel-like rheological properties in aqueous solution are prepared as follows: (a) cellulose is subjected to mercerization with aqueous alkaline metal hydroxide solution in presence of alkyl halide-containing suspending agent; (b) mercerized cellulose is reacted with one or several alkylene oxides; (c) mercerized cellulose is reacted with alkyl halide contained in suspending agent; (d) mercerized cellulose is subjected, consecutively or simultaneously, to interaction with cross-linking agent used in quantity of 0.0001 to 0.05 equivalents, said equivalents being meant to be molar ratio of structure-forming agent to structural unit of anhydro form of utilized cellulose; and (e) irreversibly cross-linked cellulose ether obtained after optional addition alkaline metal hydroxide and/or alkyl halide is isolated from reaction mixture and, if necessary, subjected to cleaning and drying. in addition, method of preparing cellulose ethers is described.
