FIELD: nonferrous metallurgy; other industries; methods of production of magnesium and chlorine by the electrolysis of the fused salts.
SUBSTANCE: the invention is pertaining to nonferrous metallurgy, in particular, to production of magnesium and chlorine by the electrolysis of the fused salts. The technical result of the invention is directed to reduction of consumption of the high-value carnallite raw and improvement of the technical-and-economic indexes of the electrolyzer, such as the reduced electric power input and the increased current efficiency. Load the electrolyzer with the melted waterless carnallite and decompose the carnallite into magnesium and chlorine at maintaining the concentration of magnesium chloride in the electrolyzer. The spent electrolyte with the share of the magnesium chloride equal to 7-10 % is removed from the electrolyzer and charged into the heated tank on the layer of the waterless carnallite. The dosed melted magnesium chloride produced at production of the spongy titanium with production of the mixture containing 50-70 % of the magnesium chloride is loaded on the surface of the spent electrolyte at the temperature of 700-800°С. The mixture is stirred, settled within 0.1-1.0 hour at the temperature of 550-650°С, the clarified part is extracted from the tank and periodically loaded into the electrolyzer for maintaining the concentration of the magnesium chloride in the electrolyte.
EFFECT: the invention ensures reduction of consumption of the high-value carnallite raw, improvement of the technical-and-economic indexes of the electrolyzer, such as the reduced electric power input, the increased current efficiency.
