FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention refers to non-ferrous metallurgy, particularly to production of magnesium and chlorine by electrolysis of melted salts. Melted dry carnallite is charged into an electrolytic cell, further it goes through electrolytic decomposition into magnesium and chlorine; periodically raw material is additionally charged into electrolyte to maintain concentration of magnesium chloride; at that spent electrolyte is removed out of the electrolytic cell. Additional charging of raw material is performed by means of introduction of melted dry carnallite and further simultaneous charging of melted magnesium chloride and solid dry carnallite. Ratio of solid dry carnallite to melted magnesium chloride is 1:(0.5-1.0), while ratio of melted dry carnallite to total amount of solid dry carnallite and melted magnesium chloride is maintained at 1:(1.5-2.0). At that contents of magnesium oxide and water in solid dry carnallite are less or equal 1% of each.
EFFECT: upgraded technical and economic facilities of electrolytic cell and reduction of costs for preparation of raw carnallite to electrolysing.
