FIELD: tobacco industry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to cigarettes with variable burning rate and to machine for making such cigarettes. Proposed cigarette has two-layer envelope whose inner layer partially covers tobacco core and inner side of outer layer. Inner layer of envelope can be made in form of one or great number of strips arranged along tobacco core which change burning rate of cigarette. Material of inner layer of envelope features low porosity and forms zones of high and low diffusion length wise tobacco core. Cigarettes proposed by invention can have one zone with high and one zone with low degree of diffusion, or several alternating coaxial zones with different degrees of diffusion. Zones with low degree of diffusion in proposed cigarettes are formed by material of inner layer of envelope. Invention makes it possible to produce cigarettes with different burning rate, including, self extinguishing cigarettes and cigarettes with preset and considerably lower burning rate, as compared with standard cigarettes.

EFFECT: enlarged range or produced cigarettes.
