FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention refers to methods of application of wear resistant coats to a cutting tool and can be used in metal working. A multy layer coat is applied by means of the vacuum-plasma application method. A lower layer is applied with nitride or carbonitride of a composition of titanium, molybdenum and iron at a ratio of mas.%: titanium 91-91.6, molybdenum 7.0-7.3 and iron 1.4-1.7, while an upper layer is applied with nitride or carbonitride of a composition of titanium, molybdenum and chromium at a ratio of mas.%: titanium 81.5-82.7, molybdenum 6.9-7.2, and chromium 10.4-11.3. Application of coat layers is performed with three cathodes assembled horizontally in one plane. The first cathode is composed out of titanium and iron. The second cathode is composed out of titanium and chromium and is placed counter the first. The third cathode is composed out of titanium and molybdenum and is inserted between the first two.
EFFECT: increased efficiency of a cutting tool.
