FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: according to the invention, there is contact between fuel and an electrolyte with formation of an interface in the casing of the fuel element. The fuel and electrolyte are also in contact with electrodes. The interface undergoes space-charge polarisation through application on the electrodes of activating voltage pulses for triggering oxidation (burning) of fuel. In that case, the electrolyte which, before application of activating pulses, is not an oxidant for the fuel is used.

EFFECT: controlled process of forming an oxidant on the contact region between fuel and electrolyte, which allows for use of any substance as fuel, which take part in the oxidation-reduction process, for example metals, organic substances, compressed gases.
