FIELD: meteorology.

SUBSTANCE: invention is related to the field of meteorology and may be used in selection of optimal lightning protection measures in middle latitudes of North hemisphere, where there are no ground sites of observation network. Density of lightning discharge in earth is determined at preset territory of middle latitudes of North hemisphere with the help of ground sites of observation network. Coordinates and time of lightning discharges are determined from space above territory of middle latitudes of North hemisphere with similar landscape. For this territory, ratio of number of lightning discharges into earth registered by ground sites of observation network and number of lightning discharges registered from space is found. From the obtained ratio, density of lightning discharges in earth is determined at preset territory of middle latitudes of North hemisphere.
