SUBSTANCE: invention relates to geophysics, and it can be used in environmental monitoring system, monitoring of near-Earth space environment. Disclosed is a method of probing characteristics of the auroral oval and the state of the earth's magnetic field, involving receiving at least one receiver in a high-latitude ionosphere of a time-synchronized stream of low-power electrons. Boundaries of auroral oval are determined from position of extreme zones in latitudinal distribution of flow of low-energy electrons. Probing data can be processed on-board the spacecraft and at the stations for receiving and processing information from the spacecraft. To specify position of auroral oval, available information sources and observation means are used, as well as archives of probing data of auroral ovals, adaptive models of auroral ovals and magnetic field of the Earth. Using the successive approximations of the position of climatic boundaries of the auroral oval and the obtained probing results of the position of oval boundaries, the state of the Earth's magnetic field is calculated. Based on long rows of observations of the position of the boundaries of the auroral oval, the change in the state of the magnetic field is calculated.
EFFECT: technical result is faster efficiency, accuracy and reliability of monitoring auroral oval, magnetic activity on high-latitude ionosphere characteristics of streams of energetic electrons.
