FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention describes a catalyst composition including carrier with surface area of at least 500 m2/kg, and sediment on the carrier, made of metal silver; metal or nitrate- or nitrite-forming compound, and IA group metal or component containing IA group metal with atomic index of not less than 37 and additionally potassium, with the value of expression (QK/R)+QHIA being within the range of 1.5 to 30 mmol/kg, where QHIA and QK are quantity of IA group metal with atomic index over 37 and potassium contained in the catalytic composition, respectively, in mmol/kg, ratio of QHIA to QK is at least 1:1, value of QK is at least 0.01 mmol/kg, R is a non-dimensional value within the range of 1.5 to 5, mmol/kg units are given against the mass of catalyst composition. The invention describes a method for obtaining ethylene oxide by ethylene reaction with oxygen in the presence of the afore said catalyst composition, and a method for obtaining 1,2-ethanediol or ether of 1,2-ethanediol, which involves obtaining of ethylene oxide by the above method and its transformation into 1,2-ethanediol or ether of 1,2-ethanediol.
EFFECT: improved catalyst selectivity and service properties throughout its life cycle.
