FIELD: measurement technology.
SUBSTANCE: R-radius spherical indenter is dented into the specimen surface with a specified force N, the contact spot radius a is determined under load, a bit after starting the denting. Preliminary tests are undertaken to determine a normal denting force considered to be a limiting value for the given strain type. During the main tests, a force is applied not falling beyond the selected limit. After a while, the indenter in contact with the specimen is shot from one side, image of contact spot 2a' and spherical indenter image 2R' are measured on the photo to determine the actual contact spot radius by the formula a=R·a'/R' and to calculate mechanical properties from values of a, R, N.
EFFECT: free selection of indenter material and size, specimen and coating, higher accuracy of keeping up loading time interval prior to measurements.
