FIELD: tests of materials for proximate determination of limit of contact endurance. SUBSTANCE: in agreement with method tested material is loaded by means of spherical indenter with radius R. After removal of load P parameters of indentation are measured. Radius of curvature of tested surface in sections by two main planes of curvature and radius of curvature of spherical indenter are measured in advance. Reduced radius of curvature Rred is found with usage of two different loads within range corresponding to measurement of hardness. Spherical indenter penetrates tested material and depth of two residual indentations is measured. Coefficient of plastic normal contact compliance is found. EFFECT: possibility of timely determination of limit of contact endurance with usage of equipment that tests hardness, increased precision of determination. 1 tbl
