SUBSTANCE: invention refers to methods of cultural items identification, particularly for identification of artwork. The method lies in generation of encrypted painting fragments data according corresponding palette colours of the artwork. Then the unique features of the artwork, belonging only to the specific author and available in every painting of this author, are determined using genetic belonging of initial colours due to determination of extinction coefficient (Ec) of overtones from the proportion Rc=Ec(R+G+B)/3, where Rc - total colour consisting of red - R, green - G, blue - B colours. Determination of the unique features of the analysed painting object of the suggested author is performed the same way as during determination of unique features of the original painting object. When identifying the analysed object, comparison of revealed unique features of the analysed painting object and the original painting object is performed according graphical characteristic curve between Ec and Rc, calculated in the most dark, light and median colours taking into account usual hardware deviation. After that conclusion about authorship is made.
