FIELD: chemistry, process technology.
SUBSTANCE: butyl rubber is produced by isobutylene and isoprene polymerization in presence of nitromethane and aluminium chloride as catalysts. Polymerisation being conducted in water environment. Nitromethane concentration in reaction medium may amount 5-500 ppm. Proportion of aluminium chloride to water may amount 30:1 to 150:1 by weight. Weight-average molecular weight MW of butyl rubber obtained is predominantly greater than 300 kg/mol.
EFFECT: extension of technology performance in butyl rubber production with high isoprene content; simultaneous achieving high conversion rate and elimination of organic compounds that are very harmful to environment.
