FIELD: transportation.
SUBSTANCE: proposed waveguide-optical sensor for monitoring railway tracks consists of a pulse former, one transmitting and n receiving optical waveguides. The optical waveguides are laid along the monitored railway track between the rail base and the surface of the railway sleeper. Between the transmitting and receiving optical waveguides there are m optical connection points, providing for transmission of optical pulses from the transmitting optical waveguide to the receiving optical waveguides if there is a mechanical effect on the optical connection point. The number of optical connections is determined from the phase shift of the optical pulse received by the receiving waveguide.
EFFECT: possibility of detecting mobile units on a monitored section of a railway track, monitoring of the technical state of superstructure members of railway tracks.
