FIELD: physics; measurement.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to investigating mechanical properties of materials. A sample is uniaxially mechanically loaded. The resulting transverse and longitudinal deformations are recorded using two independent measuring channels and Poisson's constant is calculated from the results of these measurements. Acoustic emission activity of the sample is measured and recorded on a third measuring channel synchronously with the deformations. Transverse and longitudinal deformations are measured on the time interval of mechanical loading of the sample, on which the recorded values of acoustic emission activity are minimal.
EFFECT: more accurate determination of Poisson's constant.
