SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a system for detecting oil or oil product spills, and sensors which are used in such a system. The system is mainly used on fixed offshore drilling units but can also be used on fixed coastal structures. The sensor comprises a combination of a radar set and at least one microwave radiometre. Collected data are transmitted to a control station. Transmission of data between sensors and the control station is preferably done on pixel level. The control station processes data received on the pixel level, and transmits these data to an end user, preferably through the Internet. The invention also pertains to the method of using such a system.
EFFECT: provision for efficient monitoring large sections of water surface at minimum costs.
