FIELD: environmental science.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to environment and intended for finding sources of oil pollution of environment. Oil samples are taken from a place of spill and possible sources of pollution. The samples are analysed for identification, the analysis consists of two stages. On the first stage IR spectra are compared by using method of IR Fourier spectrometry with following mathematical analysis of the results using statistical criteria of identity. On the second stage identification of those samples which were taken after comparison of IR spectra is carried out by comparing oil samples in accordance with the content of a number of metal admixtures typical for oil and mathematical analysis of the compared results is carried out by using statistical criteria of identity for final determination of identity degree.

EFFECT: increase of accuracy and certainty of sample identification.
