SUBSTANCE: invention relates to ecology and is intended for detection of sources of contamination by petroleum hydrocarbons of waters of open water areas of seas. Method for determining hydrocarbon sources of open water areas of seas in areas of development of oil and gas deposits involves sampling oil / oil products from bottling, at that, at the preliminary stage, an inventory base of all types of oil products produced and used in the given water area is formed, extraction of samples with hexane is carried out by extracting emulsified and dissolved oil components, separating oil products from polar hydrocarbons and non-oil impurities in a column filled with silica gel, using GC/PID and GC/MS chromatograms of samples, which are compared qualitatively and quantitatively with chromatograms of oil from inventory, calculating their ratios, determining indices and biochemical markers, further identification of hydrocarbon sources is continued by quantitative analysis of values of indices and biomarkers, ratios of parameters of chromatograms, at that accounting for weathering of oil in marine environment is carried out using biomarkers.

EFFECT: high accuracy and reliability of identifying the origin of hydrocarbons in the water area of the sea.
