FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: invention refers to procedures of application of wear resistant coating on cutting tool and can be implemented at metal treatment. Vacuum-plasma application of multi-layer coating is performed. There is applied a lower layer out of nitride or carbonitride of a compound of titanium, molybdenum and iron at their ratio, wt %: titanium 91.0-91.6, molybdenum 7.0-7.3, and iron 1.4-1.7. Further there is applied an intermediary layer out of nitride or carbonitride of a compound of titanium, molybdenum, chromium and iron at their ratio, wt %: titanium 86.6-87.6, molybdenum 4.6-4.8, chromium 6.9-7.5, and iron 0.9-1.1; and an upper layer of nitride or carbonitride of a compound of titanium, molybdenum and chromium at their ratio, wt %: titanium 81.5-82.7, molybdenum 6.9-7.2 and chromium 10.4-11.3. Application of coating is executed with three cathodes arranged horizontally in one plane. The first of the cathodes is complex and made out of titanium and iron, the second one is complex out of titanium and chromium and it is arranged opposite to the first cathode, while the third cathode is complex out of titanium and molybdenum and it is situated between the first and the second cathodes. The lower layer is applied with the first and the third cathodes; the intermediary layer is applied with all three cathodes; while the upper layer is applied with the second and the third cathodes.

EFFECT: increased operating capacity of cutting tool.
