FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: compositions contain: (a) coagulant from approximately 1 wt % to approximately 50 wt %, which is chosen from water-soluble inorganic salts of polyvalent metals or their mixture; (b) chlorine-containing disinfecting agent from approximately 0.01 wt % to approximately 20 wt %; and (c) masking agent compatible with chlorine, deposited on a substrate in amount ranging from 0.5 wt % to 20 wt %. The disinfecting agent can be chlorine-containing substance. The masking agent is chosen from chlorine resistant substances, for example citrus flavouring. The substrate can be clay, zeolite or their mixture. The compositions can contain a coagulant, flocculant, alkalising agent, oxidising agent and their mixture. The method of purifying drinking water involves: (a) adding a composition to water, containing approximately 0.01 wt % to approximately 20 wt % chlorine-containing disinfecting agent; (b) depositing from 0.5 wt % to 20 wt % chlorine compatible masking agent onto a substrate so as to mask undesirable taste and smell of the disinfecting agent in the drinking water; (c) extraction of effective amount of masking agent from the substrate to the water and (g) filtration, decantation, settling, floatation or their combination so as to remove, at least part of solid substance from the water.

EFFECT: efficient purification and disinfection of drinking water with masking or minimisation of undesired properties of the disinfecting agent.
