FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: method involves parallel treatment of soil with Tamm's reagent with determination of iron content (Fe2O3)ox and Mehra-Jackson reagent with determination of iron content (Fe2O3)dit. Specific magnetic susceptibility χ of the soil before and after treatment with the reagents is also determined. Specific magnetic susceptibility of extracted iron compounds is also calculated. The content of strong magnetic oxides of iron, magnetite and maghemite is calculated first in air extracts using equation Fe2O3(magn-magh)=[χFe2O3(exth)-70·10-8]:39930·10-8,, and then in the soil using equations Cmagn=(Fe2O3(magn)·Fe2O3(ox)):100 and Cmagh=(Fe2O3(magh)·Fe2O3(dit)):100.

EFFECT: method allows for determining content of soluble strong magnetic oxides of iron, magnetite and maghemite in soils for evaluation of oxidation-reduction state of soil and degree of hydromorphism.
