FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to abrasive machining and can be used in monitoring performance of a grinding wheel. Monitoring involves determination of a parametre which characterises the thermal process during grinding using physical characteristics of the latter. The parametre which is used to characterise the thermal process is rate of change of the boundary layer of thermal deformation of the cutting part of the grinding wheel. This rate of change is determined using driving and control wheels with equal diametre during grinding. The physical characteristics of the grinding process used are critical amplitude of undulation of the grinding wheel αc(i+1) and αc(i) at time ti+1 and ti, maximum critical amplitude of undulation of the grinding wheel αc(max), measured between the most prominent and sunken peaks of grains on its working surface, value of critical amplitude of undulation of the grinding wheel in the first measurement in contact with the control wheel αc(min) and area of the wearing face of the driving wheel S. A formula is provided for determining the said rate, taking into account parametres given above. Working capacity of the grinding wheel is indicated a value of the said rate ≤ 0.00025 mm/s.

EFFECT: more accurate control, which increases quality and efficiency of grinding.
