FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to chemistry of high-molecular compounds, particularly to a method of producing polyvinyl pyrrolidone, which is produced through polymerisation of N-vinyl pyrrolidone in an aqueous solution under the effect of an initiator - hydrogen peroxide in the presence of phosphate or pyrophosphate complexes of copper or iron. The process of producing polyvinyl pyrrolidone takes place at a well regulated rate and allows for obtaining a polymer with molecular weight ranging from 6000 to 10000. The obtained polymer contains less than 5 wt % α-pyrrolidone impurities and less than 0.3 wt % aldehydes per polymer.
EFFECT: design of a method which prevents formation of unwanted impurities.
