SUBSTANCE: method of producing hydrocarbon mixtures with high octane number via hydrogenation of hydrocarbon mixtures which contain fractions of branched C₈, C₁₂ and C₁₆ olefins is characterised by supply of the said mixture as it is or fractionated into two streams, one mainly containing a fraction of branched C₈ olefins, and the other mainly containing a fraction of branched C₁₂ and C₁₆ olefins, into a hydrogenation zone or into two parallel hydrogenation zones respectively. Only the stream which mainly contains saturated C₈ hydrocarbons, obtained via fractionation of a stream produced in one hydrogenation zone or obtained from the hydrogenation zone fed by the fractionated stream which mainly contains a fraction of branched C₈ olefins, is at least partially recycled back to one hydrogenation zone or the hydrogenation zone fed by the fractionated stream which mainly contains a fraction of branched C₈ olefins, and a hydrocarbon mixture with high octane number is obtained by fractionating the stream produced in one hydrogenation zone or obtained from the hydrogenation zone fed by the fractionated stream which mainly contains branched C₁₂ and C₁₆ olefins.
