FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: method is described for preparing a catalyst with a porous carrier, at least one active metal selected from a group consisting of copper, silver and gold, and at least one promoter selected from a group consisting of zinc, tin and aluminium, which is suitable for methanol synthesis. A porous carrier with specific surface area of at least 500 m2/g is prepared. At least one precursor active metal is deposited on the porous carrier, where the precursor active metal contains at least one active metal in reduced form, as well as at least one group which is bonded to the atom of the active metal through a bonding atom selected from nitrogen and phosphorus atoms. The active metal precursor is reduced using a reducing agent which includes at least one promoter metal, and at least one organic group which is bonded to the promoter atom through a carbon atom, and the reducing agent is converted to the promoter. Also described is a methanol synthesis catalyst prepared using the above described method, with a porous carrier, as well as at least one active metal deposited on the carrier and at least one promoter deposited on the carrier. The porous carrier has specific surface area of at least 500 m2/g. The active metal has specific surface area of at least 25 m2 active metal/gactive metal and the promoter has specific surface area of at least 100 m2/gpromoter. Use of this catalyst is also described.
