FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: method involves bringing starting material containing methane into contact with a dehydrocyclisation catalyst in a reaction zone in conditions which are sufficient for converting said methane into aromatic hydrocarbons, wherein said reaction zone lies inside a reactor and wherein the reactor or an internal element of the reactor has at least one surface exposed to chemical action of said starting material and which is made from refractory material, which is characterised by carbon pickup (mass of absorbed carbon per unit area of the exposed metal surface) less than 25 g/m2 when exposed to a mixture of 50 vol. % methane and 50 vol. % H2 at 900°C for 168 hours. Said at least one surface is further characterised as having a surface oxide layer which is obtained either during the dehydrocyclisation reaction, when the methane starting material contains water, carbon monoxide and/or carbon dioxide, or is obtained via preliminary oxidation of the surface by exposure to a water-containing atmosphere, preferably 5% water in hydrogen, at temperature 700 -1100°C for 6-48 hours.
EFFECT: use of the present invention alleviate the problem of coking of reactor surfaces.
