FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of inhibiting premature polymerisation and growth of a polymer chain of ethylene unsaturated monomers. The method involves addition to the said monomers an effective amount of a combination of at least one inhibitor, which is sulphonated phenol of general formula 
(I):
where (1) R2 is selected from a group consisting of hydrogen and hydrocarbon; and (2) R1 and R3 are independently selected from a group consisting of hydrogen and SO3H, under the condition that, at least one of R1 and R3 is selected as SO3H of at least one inhibitor which is nitrophenol and, if desired, one inhibitor selected from a group consisting of nitroxyl compounds and nitrosoanilines, and amine.
EFFECT: increased efficiency of the process and its cost effectiveness.
