FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of inhibiting and slowing down premature polymerisation and growth of polymers of vinyl aromatic monomers, as well as to inhibiting compositions and to compositions for obtaining a polymer based on a vinyl monomer containing a composition which inhibits or slows down polymerisation. The disclosed method involves addition of an effective amount of a composition which inhibits or slows down premature polymerisation to monomers. The inhibiting composition contains the following, in parts per million: 1-500 - at least one aromatic sulfonic acid, 1-200 - at least one cyclic tertiary amine, 1-500 - at least one nitrophenol and 1-200 - at least one nitrosoaniline. The amount of inhibiting composition added to the composition for obtaining a vinyl monomer based polymer ranges from 1 to 1000 parts per million.

EFFECT: inhibiting composition is a highly efficient and cheap mixture with excellent properties for inhibiting and slowing down polymerisation, and provides effective reduction of formation of the polymer after cutting supply of monomers.
