FIELD: physics; optics.

SUBSTANCE: method of calibrating an optical system is based on comparing the image of a calibration object obtained using the said system with the object itself. A digital virtual calibration object resembling a speckle pattern and filled with random information is created, where the linear dimension of the image of the information element of the calibration object is not less than 3 pixels of the reception matrix. The virtual calibration object is then transferred to plane surface and its digital image is obtained using the tested optical system. A correlation method is used to compare intensity distribution in the digital image and in the digital virtual calibration object, brought into view in accordance with its digital image through projective transformations. The two-dimensional matrix of position displacements of points of the said digital image relative the digital virtual calibration object is determined.

EFFECT: method enables calibration of an optical system without changing positions of reference points and their images and without prior assumptions on properties of distortion functions.
