SUBSTANCE: display device has a matrix of interferometric modulators formed on a substrate, a rear plate, a seal and one or more pads. The seal is placed between the substrate and the rear plate together for mounting the matrix of modulators into the housing. The pads are placed between the matrix and the plate. The pads prevent contact of the rear plate with the matrix. The pads are not in contact with the rear plate or the matrix. The method of making a display device provides a matrix of interferometric modulators on a substrate. Pads are placed between the matrix and the rear plate and the rear plate and the substrate are sealed together.
EFFECT: prevention or reduced damages due to fitting the device into a housing and using pads.
