FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: different devices and methods of illuminating a display are disclosed. In one embodiment, the display device includes a display operating on transmission, configured for illumination through the rear surface; a reflective display configured for illumination through the front surface; a light source placed relative the rear side of the display operating on transmission; a light guide placed relative the light source so as to receive light from the source and is configured for distributing the said light so that the said light provides front illumination of the reflective display.
EFFECT: change in optical interference of light incident on an interferometric modulator and simple design of the display device.
