FIELD: lighting engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a backlight display device. The device comprises a side-illuminated light guide having an array of light-emitting structures to enable light to exit the light guide at the location of the light-emitting structures. The layout of the light sources is used to provide light to the light guide at one or both opposite side edges. The arrangement of the light sources is controlled to provide a selected one of at least the first and second light outputs to the light guide, and the two light outputs have a different angle relative to the common plane of the light guide and as a result provide light that exits the light guide with a different range of output angles, providing a directional backlight output.
EFFECT: invention provides possibility of forming an autostereoscopic display without the need for a lenticular array.
