FIELD: computer engineering.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to projection display systems and display methods. Result is achieved by displaying input HDR image data in a low dynamic range (LDR) window of a display system, which covers the desired value in the HDR distribution of the brightness level, wherein the input image data contains the HDR brightness level distribution associated with the image scene. Displaying input HDR image data in the LDR window also includes temporal damping of the transition between two different dynamic range windows in order to avoid visual artifacts. Projection display system comprises dimmer and first modulator. Light controller may contain adjustable iris diaphragm, adjustable light sources and/or LCD-stack, which is capable of reducing brightness of the light source illuminating the first modulator. First modulator may comprise a plurality of analogue mirrors (e.g., a MEMS array), and the second modulator may comprise a plurality of mirrors (e.g., a DMD array). Display system further comprises a controller which sends control signals to a dimmer and a first modulator. Display system can display a desired dynamic range for displaying a projected image by combining control signals.

EFFECT: providing transitions from high dynamic range (HDR) to low dynamic range (LDR) for backward compatibility with legacy systems or providing new special functions, such as extended higher dynamic range, extended 3D and so on.
