FIELD: information technologies.
SUBSTANCE: in method and device signatures of class are detected by item made of paper or cardboard, in order to identify generic type of class, to which the item belongs. Optical beam illuminates the item, and detector subsystem accumulates metering points from light scattered from multiple various parts of item in process of item scanning by beam. Signature of class is derivative from own properties given to paper/cardboard in process of manufacturing, probably, by means of meshed screen used in process of paper pulp dehydration. Detection of class signature provides the possibility of identification to manufacturer or specific mechanism of paper making that made the paper.
EFFECT: improved validity of item authentication.
