SUBSTANCE: method of identifying an article may involve determination of a signature from the article based on an internal characteristic of the article, and comparing the determined signature with a stored signature. The method may also involve division of the determined signature into continuous data blocks, comparing each block with the corresponding block of the stored signature and comparing an attribute of the comparison result from each block comparison with the expected attribute of the block comparison in order to determine the compensation value for use when determining the comparison result. The method may also involve determination of the similarity result between the determined signature and the stored signature using the compensation value to adjust the determined signature. That way, the article damaged by stretching or shrinkage, can be successfully identified. Linear determination of the signature may also be allowed without loss in identification accuracy.
