FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention discloses a method of determining oil-bearing capacity of an underwater stratum (1) covered by geological layers (2) having thickness (s) below the bottom (3) of the sea (4). The method proposes to install one or more radiating antennae (9) and one or more electromagnetic field receivers (8) in the sea (4). The sea has small depth (d) of 50-350 m. The radiating antenna (9) is used to emit signals (10) from one or more rectangular pulses (11), having very low frequency between 0.01 Hz and 0.10 Hz. Reception antennae (8), lying at a distance from the emitter (9), are used to receive propagating electromagnetic signals (12). One or more components of signals (12) received from receivers (8) at a distance between approximately 1 km and approximately 12 km are analysed. It is determined whether signals (12), which serve as a distinctive feature of a stratum (1) saturated with oil fluid, significantly differ from the corresponding signal which will be observed from a water-bearing stratum.

EFFECT: possibility of determining oil-bearing capacity of a stratum in a small sea in conditions where air waves are present.
