FIELD: geophysics; measurement engineering.

SUBSTANCE: method and device can be used for determining character of underwater and underground beds which positions and geometry are known from the results of seismic survey made before. Electromagnet field is applied onto formation to be tested by means of transmitter disposed at sea bottom or close to the sea bottom. Response signal of wave field is registered by means of aerial which is also located at the sea bottom or close to it. Search of component is performed in response signal which component has to be refracted wave. Proceeding from absence or presence of refracted wave component the presence or absence of bed is determined, which bed has hydrocarbon compounds. Character of the bed can be determined without drilling a well.
