FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: electromagnetic logging device has a base which can be put into a well, at least one transmitter and receiver antenna mounted on the base, and several balancing coils mounted on the base in the immediate proximity of the transmitter or receiver antenna. The several balancing coils are designed for selective connection to at least one antenna. The balancing method involves measuring mutual coupling between the transmitter antenna and the receiver antenna on the electromagnetic logging device and selective connection of a subset of the several balancing coils to the transmitter or receiver antenna based on the measured mutual coupling.

EFFECT: easy control of the effective number of windings of the receiving or transmitting coil without using moving parts, shorter balancing time.
