SUBSTANCE: during inspection of an object, the object is moved into a passage, its speed is measured, light beams are emitted on one side of the passage and light beams not screened by the moving object are received on the other side, and the profile of at least part of the moving object is determined. The type of the moving object is determined by comparing a defined profile with information on moving objects in a data storage device. It is determined whether the object should be inspected using penetrating radiation beams and the method used to inspect the object is determined based on the identified type of the moving object.

EFFECT: automatic identification of types of vehicles and selection of the vehicle inspection mode depending on its type, as well as avoiding the need for the driver to exit the vehicle and reduction of the possible radiation dose.
