FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for hydrolytic conversion of aloeresin A to aloesin through extraction of aloesin from bitter aloe infusion and involves the following steps: hydrolysis of aloeresin A in bitter aloe infusion to aloesin and p-cumaric acid; and selective extraction of natural aloesin and aloesin obtained from aloeresin A from the bitter aloe infusion. Since aloesin has more commercial value than aloeresin A, the method also increases commercial value of juice or bitter infusion from aloe plant. The method optionally involves separation of aloesin from p-cumaric acid. Typical hydrolysis steps used in the method are acid hydrolysis, hydrolysis using a base and enzymic hydrolysis. In case of acid hydrolysis, the acid is any suitable organic or inorganic acid such as hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, nitric acid or phosphoric acid. In case of enzymic hydrolysis, the hydrolytic enzyme is usually esterase, lipase or protease.
EFFECT: amount of aloesin available for extraction from aloe plant juice increases and extraction and purification of aloesin also become easier and cheaper.
