FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in automation of the process of selecting thermal objects. In the method, a background-target image is focused on a multi-element radiation receiver and the signal amplitude is converted to a digital code which is stored in form of a two-dimensional array UN,M such that an element of that array un,m bears information on voltage proportional to brightness of background radiation from a cell of the multi-element receiver in the n-th row and m-th column. Data of the array UN,M is processed and a two-dimensional array EN-1,M-1 is formed. Values of the elements of the array en,m are compared to a threshold value equal to 0.25. If en,m is assigned a unit value if greater than the threshold value and zeroed if less than or equal to the threshold. The rectangular monitor screen is divided into cells in accordance with the number of rows and column of the array EN-1,M-1. Cells en,m with zero values which correspond to marks from point thermal objects are highlighted with a colour which contrasts with the background of the screen and spatial position of thermal objects in the segment of the search hemisphere is determined.
EFFECT: increased contrast of the image of a thermal object owing to taking into account differences in spatial radiation spectra of the thermal object and atmospheric background.
