FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: to detect a point thermal object in night sky conditions, an image array is divided into segments whose dimensions are selected based on experimentally determined values of the spatial correlation radius, spatial-correlation and threshold processing of the selected image segments, followed by formation of a binary image of the point thermal object on the monitor screen of the video monitoring device of an optoelectronic system.

EFFECT: easy decision making regarding presence of images of point thermal objects on the monitor and spatial position thereof.
