FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: plasma accelerator with closed hall current has an axially symmetric magnetic system with a source of magnetomotive force (4), an annular magnetic core with pole terminals (1) and (2) which form an annular channel (3), an orificed anode (5) and a compensator cathode. The anode (5) has a region (7) which levels the working medium and a cavity (8), separated by a porous diaphragm (6). There are inner (9) and outer (10) rings inside the cavity (8). In the first version of the accelerator, the compensator cathode has an emitting loop made from wire placed inside an annular housing. In the second version, the compensator cathode is in form of an emitting tablet (18) inside a housing (19) which is open on one end. The tablet (18) is heated by a spiral (20) which is connected to inputs of a controlled heat source (21). The open end of the housing (19) is behind the edge of the outer surface of the magnetic core.
EFFECT: invention enables use of controlled emission current of a compensator cathode and enables flow of excess electrons along magnetic field lines, which improves traction characteristics owing to elimination of pulsation of discharge current and iron particles from the stream of ions, and the service life of the accelerator is increased due to high flow density of the working medium and reduced sputtering of the wall of the magnetic core.
